The British ruled this island for 140
years from 1819 to 1959. For nearly half that time, the reigning monarch
was Queen Victoria (reigned 1837 - 1901).
We have quite a few things named after her: Victoria Street, Victoria School, Victoria Theatre. But there is no statue of her in any public space in our city. This one is tucked away in a quiet corner of the Istana gardens. Since the Istana is where the President lives, and only open to the public a few days in a year, not many Singaporeans are aware that this statue exists. Victoria's reign represented the apogee of the British ascendancy, and Singapore was one the jewels of the Empire. |
