Yawning Bread Photo Essay - March 2007
Forgotten markers of history

The British ruled this island for 140 years from 1819 to 1959. For nearly half that time, the reigning monarch was Queen Victoria (reigned 1837 - 1901).

We have quite a few things named after her: Victoria Street, Victoria School, Victoria Theatre. But there is no statue of her in any public space in our city.

This one is tucked away in a quiet corner of the Istana gardens. Since the Istana is where the President lives, and only open to the public a few days in a year, not many Singaporeans are aware that this statue exists.

Victoria's reign represented the apogee of the British ascendancy, and Singapore was one the jewels of the Empire.
