Bread Photo Essay - April 2006 Rally at Buangkok field |

This is the infamous Buangkok metro
station. It was completed together with the Northeast Line in mid 2004,
but unlike most other stations, this one, together with Sennett station,
was mothballed.
The reason for keeping Buangkok closed was that there were not enough residents in the precinct, which would mean unprofitably low traffic. But for those residents who were already living there, seeing the unused station was a daily frustration. Buangkok soon became a byword for a heartless calculating government. In early 2006 however, the government finally relented and opened the station. Just about everybody believes that the only reason they did was because the general election was coming. The rally site for the Singapore Democratic Alliance was a convenient 200 metres from this entrance, but in a soft, sodden field. |
