Photo essay - December 2005
The real Chinatown

The first problem is a definitional one. Historically, Chinatown was quite a large area, but increasingly, Singaporeans are referring only to a subpart, technically called Niucheshui. This was the part the STB devoted the most attention to in their effort to "bring life back".

Another major factor is the tourism-driven way we have named our metro stations. The station located in what 20 years ago, Singaporeans would have called the People's Park area, has been given the name "Chinatown", and before long, the public's notion of Chinatown will shrink to just the area around this.

For this photo essay, I limited myself to the STB's Chinatown, i.e. Niucheshui, since the idea came out of the debate over STB's development plans  a decade ago. This largely coincides with what's shown on the locality map within the Chinatown metro station, which for many people, would be their main entry point to the district.
