source: Channel NewsAsia website, downloaded 1 October 2008

Before the start of the Blogtv episode "Am I gay?", Channel NewsAsia opened their "Shout Box" for comments. I believe these comments are sent in by mobile phone texting.

I have downloaded all the "shouts" from Channel NewsAsia's website related to this episode to give readers a sense of the viewership.

I added the line numbering.

blogtv: we're discussing homosexuality education in schs today..
bb: hello! =)
bb: i think the prob is ppl tink gays should stay in e proverbial closet.
blogtv: should homosexuality education be taught in schools?
lucy: i think homosexuality should be kept under wraps
lucy: singapore is not ready for it
darlie: i think schs dont touch on homosexuality at all
sue: i think its hilarious that ppl still think one cud be 'taught' to be gay.
lucy: singapore is not ready for it
bb: just coz i learn about maths doesnt mean i wanna b a mathematician
bb: so why not teach homosexuality ed in schs? make ppl more open.
susie: our teachers are too prejudiced to teach homosexuality!
sue: also spore is a conservative society is not a valid counter argument!
mimi: bb: so u mean we can force pple to be more open?
darlie: i agree that schs should teach homosexuality ed
dan: whats the fuss about gays anyway?
bb: our teachers just dont know enough. if ppl werent so ignorant theyd b more open
dan: they live their lives, we live ours. no big deal
louie: not teaching it in sch doesnt mean that the problem is not there
susie: singapore is conservative? but prostitution is legal. hmmmm
lucy: parents are to be blamed too. the older generation is so homophobic
darlie: i mean, homosexuality ed do not have to be like "you cnnt be gay."
po: yeah gays are like the minority. who cares about them?
darlie: it can be how to respect homosexuals
sue: to louie> what do you mean by problem?
bb: i think ppl are rejecting what they don't know.
hello: is homosexuality really taught in schools ?
hello: i thought its illegal to be gay
bob: i think teaching homosexuality is opening up a pandaoras box
hello: gays are bad for society arent they
bob: why do we want to promote deviant sexualities?
hello: pandaoras never had a box
L: I don't see why gays are bad.
bb: homosexuality ed also doesnt mean promoting a gay lifestyle.
cnalover: hi guys its cna lover again back!
cnalover: hello producer! i love cna
bob: gays are too promiscuous. what msg are we teaching man?
bb: s'poreans r mature enough to know the difference.
cnalover: they are many gays in cna starting from
hello: gays are bad because they promote an unhealhty lifestyle
gambit: to bob> because ppl like you label it deviant sexuality, we need it in schools
L: I am sorry. you just don't know much. Not all gays are promiscuous.
cnalover: how many gays are they in cna ?
bb: hello > it's not illegal to be gay! it's just illegal 4 2 guys to have sex
lucy: gays make good friends
lucy: coz they wont take advantage of us....
cnalover: starting from the top
po: not all gays r promiscuous but most are.
susie: hello: and how would they be promoting an unhealthy lifestyle?
L: I don't think gays are promiscuous nor are they unhealthy.
dan: L:are you gay?
darlie: hey i think it is unfair to say gays are bad
hello: hello L, not all but most gays are prosmicuous
hello: thats why aids are rampant amount gays
lucy: po: thats a bloody unfair stereotype. what proof do u have?
L: I am sorry but not most are. Those are just the ones you see on the surface.
hello: exactly po
susie: is AIDS really more rampant among gays?
hello: L u must be a different type of gay
susie:: L: are u speaking from experience? pray tell
gayboy: hello excuse me dont overgeneralise us gays. we dont overgeneralise the heteros.
hello: lucy it is a common statistic that aids are common among gays. thats proof enoug
L: No, i am not. I have once seen the statistics that heterosexuals are of a bigger
teeth: see,i agree with the person who said homosecuality ed can be abt teaching respec
L: proportion.
hello: yes susie aids is really more rampant among gays
lucy: anyway even if u want it, moe will never allow it to be taught in schs
teeth: gays still contribute to society, they are part of us
lucy: sex ed is crap in schs to begin with
po: i go to gay bars all e time and its frm wat i observed and ppl i noe
L: There are different types of gay people. You can't know them all.
cnalover: this is a great topic for cna to discuss
teeth: just like how we shouldnt discriminate the low iq..
lucy: hello: point us to the stats then
L: Because most of them are living a normal lives in closets.
teeth: we shouldnt outcast the gays too
cnalover: once again cna discusses the most important subjects
sue: aids isn't rampant amongst gays.
cnalover: cna is the best. it discusses real issues that affects real people
sue: homophobia is comparable to racism.
L: Those who are at the gay bars are most probably those who are out.
cnalover: cna is the best
glutton: why is it great for cna to discuss?
sue: the person you are penalizing doesn't choose to be the thing u dislike.
hello: youre right L, thats where gays belong in the closet
hello: yes it is sue
L: Well, gays aren't really bad people. They might be people who once helped you.
gayboy: i think most gays know how to practise safe sex. im careful.
cnalover: theres no subject too taboo for cna to discuss. only cna dares
lucy: come on...honestly do u think teaching it in sch will help at all?
glutton: we should teach that being gay is wrong
cnalover: hi glutton, it is great because CNA shows that gays are part of singapore
glutton: it's not natural
Phin: Hey guys. How goes the night?
gayboy: po > i think the gays you see at gay bars are the ones who r looking for a fling
glutton: i always see sch girls behaving intimately in public
gayboy: just like the ppl u c at clubs r looking for someone to pick up.
hello: well good luck to you gayboy. hope u are still around in 5 years
dan: well gays are part of society...so i guess we have to accept them
hello: i would have preferred for gays not to help me or even interact with me
L: I agree cna is taking abold step.
glutton: gays are often v prone to PDA in public
L: Being gay may be wrong, but often then not i doubt it can be changed.
hello: absolutely glutton. we should teach that there is no place in singapore for gays
alonso: whoa the race was tiring man
L: most often than not, those are straight girls.
gayboy: glutton > oh its too late for me to have "gay is wrong" education now
alonso: but the girls were hot.why be gay when there're so many hot girls ard
lucy: whats PDA?
gayboy: anyway it's not like i chose to be gay.
Phin: Glutton, how did you come to that conclusion?

(Blogtv's half-hour program begins at about his point}

hello: of course it can L
Phin: From what I see in public, it's mostly boys and girls sucking face and holding hands.
massa: what a crappy race [1]
sue: i think the problem is a lack of understanding of homosexuality
massa: my lollipop man made a big boo boo
glutton: well..then start young.from pri sch!
gayboy: alonso > i love you! [2]
lucy: i think the stigma is too huge to shake off now
sue: every ignorant comment posted here. just further proves the need for education.
hamilton: yes i am gonna win the championship
gayboy: i agree w phin
L: You are not gay, that's why you say it can. I know them personally.
bob: start from pri school?!
bob: then ull be putting thoughts into the minds of young boys!
hamilton: haha well get a better lollipop then loser massa
Phin: Hi Hello. We encourage open discussion but not hate-speak. Watch that gutter mouth.
glutton: well the sch kids especially.
L: It has been hard for them to hide who they are.
bb: glutton > i think you need some homosexuality ed classes!
susie: yes yes there is a need for education.... but hello, u think our teachers can teach it well?
alonso: i didnt expect myself to win.it was great.singapore is great
coulthard: hey i have never met a gay F1 driver in all my years
coulthard: phin do u have any idea why there are no gay F1 drivers ?
mary: hi guys
hello: u should be shipped out of singapore on the next boat L
mary: i like to believe i am straight.i mean iAM straight.
mary: but at certain parts of my life,i do wonder if i like girls
hello: ok sorry phin.
sue: so dont throw out the baby with the bathwater. train the teachers.
mary: i think the problem is more prevalent in single sex schs.
cnalover: hi mary. welcome to the best channel on earth!
sue: to coulthard> how many f1 drivers have u met?
mary: it's the ppl you mix ard with.
bob: i dunno...call me a prude but gays still make me feel uncomfortable
cnalover: is the show starting soon ?
bob: especially when in close proximity
bb: only if teachers were trained to deal with such issues with sensitivity
alonso: this is such a great show, discussing such great topics
susie: bb: and who would train the teachers?
hamilton: they are no gay f1 drivers because theres so many hot gals in f1
susie: they dont even seem to get normal sex ed right!
alonso: there are so many ppl on the shoutbox.s'poreans are so enthusiastic!
gayboy: bob > you are a prude! singaporeans who reject gays are prudes!
susie: my teacher was too shy to talk about it!
gayboy: bob > you are a prude! singaporeans who reject gays are prudes!
alonso: yea lewis!the girls were hot yup!who did you hit on?
bb: hmmm trained counsellors?
L: Actually, we can't everyone to accept every type of people.
gayboy: how about i teach those classes? i can tell ppl wat it's really like 2 b gay.
susie: trained counsellors? kids who get sent to them are labelled wierdos!
lucy: actually what is it really like to be gay?
lucy: i guess it must suck.
sandro: i am gay
susie: wow, otto fong is on!
lucy: isnt otto the RI teacher that appeared in the press much?
gayanot: good topic.. i wonder too
sue: i think having a gay person teach these classes is a great idea.
luke: why would we want a gay as a role model?!
luke: why not a nomral straight person??
gayboy: it does. i cant tell anyone except my boyfriend and our close friends.
gayboy: i know him! otto fong! he's a model for us gays, being so brave and all.
susie: i thk if homosexuality is thought, parents will barge to moe to complain
Jeremy: We need more shows like this to expose the public to more gay issues.
Phin: Luke, define “normal”.
sue: yea so they can give personal insight
wendy: parents will definitely complain!
bo no: i agree! having a gay person makes it more real not smth on tv
gayboy: luke > why would we want a homophobe teaching these classes?
thisisme: because being gay don mean that they have nth that we can learn from!
wendy: i would! we shouldnt normalize homosexuality!
jojo: i think we all have more gay friends than we think, we just dont know!
sue: its like how ppl look up to ppl of the same gender i reckon
luke: normal as in straight. why teach deviant sexualities?
repeal377: i agree. its so important! this is holding us back
luke: if u repeal 377A wont u have lots of gays going at it in the open?
amusedkid: there is no right and wrong. live and let live.
po: i hope homosexuality ed doesnt mean teaching a gay lifestyle.
amusedkid: who are we heterosexuals to judge?
susie: i honestly think singapore is opening up with homosexuality.
thisisme: if u don talk about things, it wouldn mean that they will just go away right
susie: its a slow but sure start...
Phin: Luke, I don't think sexual identity is enough to label someone as “normal” or “odd”.
Phin: A person is much more than who they're attracted to.
peter: wendy> why not? because it isnt normal, is a stupid answer
gayboy: ewww no even if 377a was repealed i wouldnt do it in the open!
sue: why? do u hav hetro couples having sex in the open?
leona: i think we should just teach the facts...not promote alt lifestyles
shawn: I am gay but plse keep 377a. It's wrong
toxicmilk: theres's nth wrong with liking someone of the same sex
jeremy: my qn is - why are so many fashion designers gay?
Ashton: Well, I guess that's true. If we repeal 377A, the sudden amount of open-ness...
jeremy: and why are so many hair-dressers gay?
toxicmilk: actually just liking the same sex means i am gay??
Ashton: ... Would be too much for the public to take. : X
luke: well heterosexuals are the majority. shouldnt that count for something?
Nat: educating about homosexuality doesn't promote it.
shawn: no one is born gay. They need help.
jess: if straights are straight - then gays are crooks?!
susie: shawn: why do u think its wrong?
sue: to shawn> why?
Phin: Luke, right-handers are the majority. Should we do something about left-handers?
jeremy: they will never allow people to teach about homosexuality in schools...
me: i don understand what's wrong with being open?
jeremy: the religious organisations will flip!!
bb: i think facts like how ppl know if they're gay, why ppl are gay, should b taught
Xio: Erm I just wanna share that.. being a gay teenagers I have been through alot..
W: There are also les ard! LOL
lucy: i dont think counsellors help coz they will try to "cure" u
shawn: We can accept gays as people but will never approve their gay behavior.
Xio: Being despised and being humiliated by ignorant str* guys
Nat: It's just a stereotype?
shawn: There are many gays who have changed.
Eric: We just need guidance, not help.
bb: my impression is that gays are more creative than straight ppl
toxicmilk: gays are cool.gays are creative
W: -.-
luke: nope, its different.

(Blogtv's half-hour program ends at about this point)

luke: coz gays do not make up a normal family unit
gayboy: shawn > i was born gay. what kind of help do you think i need?
luke: they cant reproduce and contribute to our replacement rate!
Eric: i think the girl seriously needs to work on her english more
manly: u should do a survey in gyms! ask them this topic
susie: shawn: gays that have changed? in what way?
jess: wat about gays in the army?? how are they treated?
roti: if not for religion,i dont think being gay is wrong
lucy: i think without gays, there would be a creative dearth in singapore
Eric: we're just different
Phin: Toxicmilk, that's stereotyping as well. There are cool, uncool, geeky, athletic, polite, rude people
lucy: so we cant really do wityhout them u know
Phin: Who could be of any sexual orientation.
roti: schs should teach homo ed.move away from the taboo.
Nat: Who are the gays who changed?
korean: em..if we sex with gay.. is there any problem with them??
gayboy: shawn > do you know of one?
roti: we are a modern society,we cnnt act like the problem is not there
W: the thing is everyone is actually born to like one another.
me: so you get into a relationship for producing our next generation?
me: gays in the army are not in combat
W: it's the society that shapes us such that we hav to like the opp size -.-
Imo: luke: Replacement rate is not EVERYTHING in this world.
roti: bcos we dont talk abt it,doesnt mean there are no gays ard
bob: why shouldnt gays do combat in the army?
Eric: i think religion surpresses the mindset of homosexuality
bob: isnt that unfair?
Imo: No matter how much the government tries to emphasize that.
shawn: Never let unreformed gays teach our children abt homosexuality.
bo no: she's a kid. a pretty sharp one at that. leave her be.
Phin: I hate to keep focussing on you, Luke…
roti: there are ppl who are gay cos they think it is cool, some are really stuggling
Phin: but I know many straight people who won't be contributing to our replacement rate either.
Phin: Should they be treated differently?
bo no: yea if i were gay, i wud hate for ppl to keep expecting me to be 'creative'
Eric: it wouldn't be a problem if u don't think it's one
jerrel: im gay i practice safe gay sex
lucy: i do agree with u roti. singaporeans pretend the prob doesnt exist
toxicmilk: oh,but there are really studies which show tt gays are mroe creative
gayboy: i would move to canada just so that i can marry my bf and adopt a kid.
Imo: And anyway, gay or not, people are people.
dylan: whats an unreformed gay?
luke: nope, but u see they could if the wanted.
Phin: Shawn, we shouldn't let uninformed anyone – straight or gay – teach our children anything.
bob: haha thats so true. my teachers glossed over sex ed.
me: some gay couples do choose to have kids on their own thru means like IVF
Eric: I'm one, and I have no problem with living it.
bob: and my young female teacher turned pink
J: interesting to note when being gay is discussed, it's always directed at guys
Eric: It's obvious that geylang is a better hook up place than the mere net
luke: i pity the kid growing up with gay parents though. hes going to be ostracized
me: >lmo: way to go man!
Nat: Singapore can choose not to talk about it at all. But, the "problem" willstill e
lucy: i agree with J: its always gay guys. it seems more ok to be lesbian
Eric: I seriously wonder how to learn sex education from books?
gayboy: yeah what about lesbians and bisexuals? even transvestites?
leona: why is it that gay action is gross but lesbian action is hot to the opposite sexes?
Eric: So I am not surprised that straight people actually add up more to the rates HIV
J: I mean, what about girls who are confused about their sexuality too?
dylan: nat: so what is the prob, really?
roti: i was involved in a sex play and i asked my teacher y dont we touch on homo prb
J: Seems lack of coverage in that area...hmm...
Eric: Is straight family any better? With all the cheating and divorce rates?
gayboy: luke > the kid will be ostracized by homophobes like you
sexist: unless time is free up for sex education nothing will happen
lucy`: they should change the sex ed syllabus
roti: my tcher just said, cnnt la.and he just avoided the whole thing
lucy: it needs to be real, man
A: Every one deserves to be treated the same way
masa0: what's wrong being different??
Phin: Well, that was fun. A bottle of sauv blanc calls.
me: there is this article is time that showed that straight couples do have stuff
Phin: See you guys next week!
bleah: bash teachers why don't you?
me: that they should learn from gay couples
Eric: I agree with gayboy, its probably luke that ostracized gay kids.
shawn: It's not normal. It's unhealthy
AL: There are also bankers, chef, teachers and many more who are gays..
luke: oh pls...im not ostracizing anyone. just think we should keep status quo.
luke: nothing wrong with it why fix it
shawn: I'm gay and I feel it's not good.
alonso: love you SINGAPORE!
bleah: You have no clue about schools and education in Singapore
iamgay: gay friends are more understanding than the opposite sex
bb: fd has a great idea. a non-examinable module in schools.
sexist: what can the counsellor do
susie: non examinable students wont pay attention!
roti: oh no shawn,cheer up
Nat: Why are they unhealthy? Explain?
Eric: shawn, learn to get a life then. You're pathetic
A: Gays are a girl's best friend.
