The third event in the month-long IndigNation programme organised by various gay activist groups drew a packed crowd of some 70 people, both gay and straight. Titled ContraDiction, the event on Thursday night was believed to be one of the first gay and lesbian poetry evenings in Singapore. The 90-minute poetry recital held at Utterly Art, an art gallery, showcased the works of six local poets. The event's organiser Dominic Chua, a poet himself, noted that there was considerable talent in the gay community and was delighted that the event went ahead. "Of course there was the fear that we wouldn't be allowed to stage this, and in fact the Media Development Authority (MDA) contacted me on Monday and said we would need to apply for a permit," he said. "But the MDA's quick approval of the permit speaks well of a genuine willingness to listen on the part of our Government."
